Willie Collum will referee this season’s first Old Firm derby at the weekend. The 31-year-old will become one of the youngest-ever officials to take charge of the fixture as Rangers visit Celtic Park on Sunday.

Only last month Collum, who has been refereeing in the SPL for the past four years, took his first Champions League game when Copenhagen won 2-0 at Panathinaikos.

“I think the younger referees are now coming through to the top level and we see a young referee taking charge of the first Old Firm game of the season,” Scottish Football Association referees’ chief Hugh Dallas told BBC Scotland.

“It’s his first Old Firm game on Sunday and that is a young referee who only seven or eight years ago who was operating within the youth academy, so it augers well for the future.”
