There has been many claims made about Celtic’s new Swedish centre back Carl Starfelt since his big money move to Parkhead.

After a shaky start to his Hoops career, the six capped international has still to convince many fans he has got what it takes to make the grade at Paradise.

Pundit’s like Davie Provan and Hugh Keevins still claim that they are unsure whether he is the real deal and even although Starfelt’s performances of late have been improving, the big Swedish defender still has a bit of work to do to convince the fans that he should be an automatic first team pick.

Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie, who spends most of his time criticising the Celtic team, changed tac and jumped to the defence of Starflet using a bizarre explanation as to why Celtic’s summer buy is struggling to find form.

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie said, “Everyone is having a go at Starfelt and Carter-Vickers.

“I’m not sure that’s fair. I’m thinking this is still a transitional period.

“For crying out loud, Starfelt is still learning how to be a centre back.

“This is one of the first times he’s played in the middle.”

Okay. Now try that again?

He is still ‘learning how to be a centre back’?

At 26 years old, I think Starfelt is past that point of being a developing player and if he is still ‘learning’ to play a position that Celtic signed him for £4m for, then what does it say about our scouting policy and Ange Postecoglou’s judgement of a player?

Absolutely nothing because McAvennie is talking absolute claptrap.

Although he did get one thing correct.

The reason Starfelt is struggling is because it is a transitional period for him.

Playing for Celtic is huge and bigger and better players than Starfelt have struggled to adjust. Give him time and I believe he will come good.
