How a Defensive Midfielder Changes Nothing

There are always rumours in pre-season, but one that seems to be sticking is that we are looking for a defensive midfield player. If rumours are true, then this seems to fly in the face of the non-stop attack that Celtic fans were accustomed to in Ange Postecoglou’s first season in charge.  However, the reality of a signing in this position means several things, all very positive to the season ahead.

Last season, our captain Cal Mac’s preferred position was in the holding midfielder role, if this continues, a DM signing will give Ange an opportunity to rest our most valuable player. Alternatively it will allow Ange to use Callum in a further forward position than he is currently. Everyone remembers the Callum McGregor of Brendan Rodgers tenure, getting into the box, adding his share of goals and delivering his share of assists. As, in my view, the best midfielder in Scotland, Callum has the ability to play any of these positions but pushed further forward will allow him to dictate the pace of the game, without having to worry about leaving his team short at the back.

More than this, a defensive minded midfielder will allow for more support of the centre backs, allowing the full backs to further push on and inwards as is the demand of the Gaffer himself. In short, the signing of a defensive minded CM doesn’t change our tactics, it just further plays to our strengths.

We don’t need a defensive midfielder. We need someone with a nasty streak who’ll deter the hammer throwers from kicking our players up and down the park.
