Former Manchester United ‘keeper Ben Foster shared a memory of a Champions League clash when his side travelled to Glasgow to face Gordon Strachan’s Celtic.

Strachan was coming up against his former mentor in Alex Ferguson as the legendary manager brought up his superstars to face a Hoops side that had gained automatic entry into the groups stages as Scottish Premier League champions.

Ferguson had a glittering array of talent at his disposal as Ronaldo, Giggs, Berbatov, Tevez and Ferdinand lined up against Hinkel, Caldwell, McManus, Brown and Scott McDonald.

But it wasn’t the line up that had Foster gazing in wonder at Parkhead when he revealed his first taste of a Celtic Park European night under the lights.

Speaking to the Fozcast podcast, Foster said, “I’ve played in a Celtic v Man U game once up at Celtic.

“So when I was at Man United and we was in the Champions League we  drew the game one all.

“I definitely should have saved the goal, but don’t worry about that.

“But the atmosphere at Celtic Park, I have to say it’s the best atmosphere I’ve ever played in my life.

“It got in my head like you would not believe that. Honestly, I was crapping myself all the way through the game

“I think I was about 25 or 26 at the time and it got in my head like you wouldn’t believe.

“I remember the noise is like nothing I’d ever heard before. Honestly, when they’re attacking their fans suck the ball into the goal. I’m not even joking.”

An outstanding account of a memorable night at Celtic Park, one which the Hoops were unlucky not to win which would have seen them qualify for the knockout stage of the UEFA Cup.
