Former Celtic player Craig Burley has tipped former teammate Steve Clarke to take charge of the Hoops in the event that Brendan Rodgers leaves anytime soon.

The press and pundits have loved to speculate on the future of Rodgers at Celtic this season after some poor results and transfer drama that took over our entire summer.

Burley reckons the job Clarke has done at Kilmarnock over the last 12 months makes him a shoe-in for the job if the double-treble winning manager does move on.

As quoted by The Herald, Burley said:

The story of 2018 for me is what Steve Clarke has done with Kilmarnock. Clarkey is surely the leading candidate if Brendan left any time soon. He comes across as dour but he has a dry sense of humour. And he can cut you.

When we were at Chelsea, we were playing I think Sheffield Wednesday and I had an absolute stinker. I mean, a right shocker.

I’ve got my head in my hands in the dressing room and I spy Clarkey coming over to me, and I’m think he’s going to pat my back and tell me not to worry and that it was one of those days.

Instead he says, ‘son, you were terrible. Go home, take two Paracetamols, shut the door behind you and close the curtains. Don’t come out for two days.’

Killie have emerged as one of the most consistent sides in the entire division over the last year and seem intent on pushing both Celtic and Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Clarke would be a serious contender for job if say, Rodgers left tomorrow, but we all know that’s not going to happen.

It’s a bit early to assess who would be the right man for the job, while Celtic fans don’t have as much faith in the long-term future of Rodgers at the club as they once did, you’d still tip him to remain until the end of his contract.

By that point, who knows who the ‘in-form’ manager would be and whether Clarke would be suitable?
