A couple of days ago I wrote an article on how a finance expert seemed to pour cold water on Celtic’s impressive half year financial results. .

A profit of over £25m when others are pouring money down the drain was seemingly not as good as it looked because the bulk of the profit was from players sales.

Dr Dan Plumley, a professor at the Sheffield Hallam University said at the time, “Most of it is transfer sales,”

“A degree of caution is needed for the headline profit figure. They are only for six months and most revenue is generated in that six months.

“You have got season ticket sales, summer transfers, UEFA money.

“So it’s no surprise to see that they expect to run at a loss for the next six months.

“It is an excellent figure, however.

“But you do have to look at it in the context of those player sales, for sure.”

I don’t know about you, but player sales make a massive part of Celtic’s finance and scouting strategy. It has done for decades. So it obviously would play a huge part in helping the club post a profit.

But that wasn’t all that helped drive the excellent finance results according to Kieran Maguire.

Speaking to Football Insider, the finance guru detailed one clear element that seems to have been missed by others, “Very impressive results all round.

It shows the importance of matchday income, which has been as high as 50 per cent of total revenue in previous years.

There has been reasonably good cost control as well. Over the course of the last decade, they have had in excess of £130m from player sales.

“Player development and selling is part of the Celtic business plan.

“They have executed that to perfection and this is evidence to back that up.”

So there we have it. Whilst player sales are hugely important to Celtic’s successes, match day income and cost cutting also played a crucial role in the clubs prudent accounts.

There is no context.

Every part of Celtic’s financial model is working.

We are a well run club and that will keep us sustainable for years to come.
