The future of Leicester City loanee Filip Benkovic has long been the topic for some debate amongst the tabloids when it comes to Celtic, but their gaffer Claude Puel has always really played down the talk of a recall in January when he has pressed on the subject.

With the January window now open once again, the rumour mill and speculation goes into overdrive and Puel has again been tasked with questions on what will happen to the 21-year-old Croatian this month, and it doesn’t appear his mind has changed, so it will come as good news to Celtic fans as Benkovic has quickly established himself as a fan favourite given his efforts in our shirt.

With 20 appearances and two goals to his name already, Puel has now effectively ruled out a recall for the player, as long as Leicester don’t hit an injury crisis between now and the end of the month.

Speaking to Sky Sports this week, the Frenchman said.

“We have a lot of defenders at the club. Assuming we don’t get any injuries, it’s better Filip maintains his loan at Celtic.”

In some ways, with Benkovic going off with an apparent hamstring injury in the first half of the Rangers tie, as long as that isn’t a serious problem, that does play in our favour when it comes to a recall anyway.
