Celtic were linked with a move for Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay last week, with The Scotsman reporting that he was a potential target for the Hoops after the Red Devils made him available for a loan exit in January.

With Scott Brown suffering another injury setback in the win against Hibernian on Saturday, could the Scotland international be the ideal back-up for the 33-year-old midfield veteran?

It’s a long old season and although Brown has played an immense amount of matches over the last couple of years, there’s no guarantee his fitness will hold up all season given his advancing years and lengthy career of physical battles.

Rated as worth £6.3m by Transfermarkt, McTominay has made 29 appearances for the Old Trafford side at the age of just 21 and is tipped for a big career at the elite level, picked out by Jose Mourinho as a player with real potential.

However, he’s made just four appearances this season and is struggling to get regular action for an under pressure United side.

He may not be a viable long-term option for Celtic, but with resources stretched in January, he may be the perfect short-term insurance policy against potential Brown injury problems in the second half of the season.
