On this Day 2016 – Rangers 1-2 Celtic

|

As the build up to the Glasgow Derby continues this week, I thought we should look back at the first ever league meeting at Ibrox between Celtic and Rangers.  Rangers achieved promotion from the Scottish Championship at the second time of asking and Celtic took Brendan Rodgers to Govan to face the club that knocked them out of the previous seasons Scottish Cup 5-4 on penalties.

Celtic were already sixteen points ahead in the league and were on a superb run of form having only dropped two points in the season so far to Inverness Caley Thistle in an away 2-2 draw back in September that year so they went to Ibrox full of confidence and ready to put their rivals out of the title race.

Things didn’t go to plan early on in the game for the Hoops as Mark Warburtons men went one up in eleven minutes with a typical Kenny Miller poachers goal at the back post from a James Tavernier cross. Rangers continued to press Celtic but couldn’t find the killer second goal.

Celtic had chances of their own.  Sinclair hit the post after a mazy run down the left flank bu Celtic eventually equalized on the 33rd minute from corner. Sinclair’s delivery floated over everyone in the box and Dembele controlled with one touch then smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

Both sides hit the woodwork during the match. Dembele smashed a volley against the bar at 1-1 and Kenny Miller also hit the post for the home side. Celtic eventually took the lead through Scott Sinclair after a cute Patrick Roberts reverse pass set Armstrong free down the right and he fired a low cross that Sinclair finished from close range at the back post.

The win effectively sealed the title for the Bhoys and in an historic season, Rodgers men went on to become Invincible Treble winners.
