There’s genuinely something wrong with our rivals fanbase at the moment. They have just won their first title and put a stop to the ten in row dream. Fair play to them. They have played well whilst our team contributed massively to our own downfall.  And while this season is a massive disappointment, there is no doubt we will come back stronger.

But there is a strange narrative kicking about on the blue side of Glasgow that seems to be taking genuine precedent over what should be a celebrated title win. Somehow, and I don’t know why, our rivals fans are continuing to try and downplay our clubs successes over the last nine years because “Ranger’s weren’t there”. It’s a strange argument, but it was dealt with beautifully on live radio, for a change.

On Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, a fan of the blue half of Glasgow called the show to congratulate his team on their title win and in the very same breath try and detract Celtic captain, Scott Brown’s, achievements because, and these are his words, “Rangers wurnae there!”.  No coherent argument put forward for his opinion, no fact based information, just the usual bile and nonsense.

Pundit High Keevins addressed the callers point at Rangers not being there quite vehemently,  “Well I’ve been through this countless times. Rangers weren’t there because it was Rangers fault.  Rangers mismanaged the club’s affairs, and eventually went into liquidation thereafter they went into the bottom tier of Scottish football.

Would you have John Kennedy as next Celtic manager?

YES

NO

“But the top tier of Scottish Football doesn’t cease to exist because Rangers weren’t there and Celtic can only beat the teams who are in the division. So, the fact that Rangers weren’t there, that’s Rangers fault!”

Co pundit, Jim Duffy, was having none of it and put the caller in his place with a brilliant put down that just needed a round of applause to precede it, “You can’t deny Scott Brown’s achievements, no matter what team you support.  Scott Brown, whether it’s the 10th title he didn’t win, I think he’s won nine. He’s got an incredible trophy cabinet, bursting at the seams. Rangers were there for the cups as well.

“You have pay tribute to Scott Brown’s achievements, the fact that he didn’t win this year, fair enough. That happens, you can’t win every single trophy, but he’s won most of them. So I think that you’ve been a wee bit picky there on Scott Brown, as he’s got more trophies than all the Rangers players put together.”

Now, of course, Duffy’s comment was factually incorrect as it was pointed out later that McGregor and Davis have more combined medals than Brown, but that only highlights the magnitude of Brown’s achievements and makes those on the other side of Glasgow look extremely foolish.

To be honest, I was disappointed that no one mentioned that Brown had won a Quadruple Treble while Rangers “were back” (all these clichés they continue to use are nauseating) or the fact that even as bad as Celtic have been this season, Rangers still failed in the League Cup, ut hey, the records don’t lie and Celtic continue to keep making them.
