As we approach the business end of the season we do have another international break ahead of us this month as Scotland prepare to face Spain and Cyrpus in Group A of the Euro Qualifiers.

Callum McGregor, Greg Taylor and Anthony Ralston all expected to be called up by Steve Clarke for Scotland, it is the Republic of Ireland national side that hit the Celtic headlines this month.

Mikey Johnston decided to choose to play for the Irish national team this month after declaring his desire to represent the Republic in an international capacity.

And it seems he could be set to win his first international cap after his FIFA clearance was approved.

Currently on loan at Vitoria Guimares, Johnston said that his reason for choosing Ireland was down to his proud Irish heritage [FAI twitter], “Myself and my family have always been proud of our Irish roots with my grandad hailing from Derry and to potentially now play for Ireland is something that really excites me.

“It’s up to me now to impress the manager and to get selected to the squad, but my focus now is to break into that squad and to make an impact for the team in a big year for the team.”

Johnston will return to Celtic at the end of the season where he will no doubt aim to break into Ange Postecoglou’s side which will not be an easy task considering the form of Jota and Haksabanovic.

I will be leaving Vital Celtic at the end of the month but will continue to cover club news in another capacity. More details later.
