Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted that supporters should be alarmed by the poor start to the season, recognising that his side aren’t playing up to the standards expected by fans of the club.

The latest blow came at the hands of Kilmarnock on Sunday, with the Ayrshire side snatching a 2-1 victory in injury time at Rugby Park.

The result means that the reigning champions sit in sixth position in the Scottish Premiership table, six points behind league leaders Hearts who have won every match so far this term.

Asked if supporters should be alarmed, Rodgers told BBC Scotland:

Yes, I think they should, I think they should.

When you are a huge club like Celtic, the demand is to win and the last couple of years we’ve done that really well and playing in a style which is synonymous with the club.

So it hasn’t been the same but we have to work to make it better. You’re always under pressure if you don’t win for the big clubs.

So today, for us, we didn’t win; it was a poor result for us. We have to go away now, take our medicine and get ready for Wednesday.

The reaction to yesterday’s match from supporters has been fierce, but at least Rodgers is recognising that everything is very much below par.

Next up for the Hoops is Scottish League Cup action, travelling to Perth to face St Johnstone, who lost heavily at Ibrox yesterday.

After dispatching Partick Thistle in the last round, Rodgers’ team know that a win will see them book a semi-final place and put them within touching distance of retaining the trophy and delivering the first silverware of the season.

Hopefully we’ll see a much better performance.
