Former Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has left Middlesbrough after only twelve months in charge.

The Scot departed the Championship strugglers by mutual consent today in the wake of their 2-1 home defeat to his former club Leeds United at the weekend, despite still having two-and-a-half years remaining on his current deal.

Boro are currently only two places and a couple of points above the relegation zone after starting the campaign as title favourites.

“Gordon is a man of great integrity. He has torn up his contract and walked away without compensation because he felt it was in the best interests of this football club,” Boro chairman Steve Gibson told Middlesbrough’s official website.

“There are very few managers who have ever done that but that is the mark of the man. He feels he has given it everything he has got here but it hasn’t worked out and he has taken full responsibility for that.”
