£10m price tag rules Celtic out of international defender pursuit

|

Celtic have been priced out of a January transfer window for Atalanta right-back Timothy Castagne, according to The Scottish Sun.

It was reported last week that the Hoops were hoping to complete a £5m move for the Belgian international, as a long-term replacement for Mikael Lustig at right-back, however it appears that the Italian club are now looking for far more money than that.

The Sun reckon they will hold out for £10m for the 23-year-old, whose contract doesn’t expire until 2021.

Given our spending limitations, that pretty much rules us out of the pursuit, a sign of how difficult it is to navigate transfer windows for a club like Celtic in 2019. Castagne is struggling to get a regular game for the Serie A outfit this season and yet is likely beyond our budget.

Celtic hold a year’s option on Mikael Lustig’s contract, which is due to expire without intervention at the end of the season, but given his deterioration in form over the last 18 months, fans are hoping to see new blood in the right-back slot as soon as possible.

With Castagne now an unrealistic target, it’ll be interesting to see what other names come up over the next few weeks.
