Celtic’s transfer business has been an absolute thing of beauty over the last two decades.

Our ability to find gems for a relatively low fee, develop them and sell them on for a profit has been outstanding.

Admittedly, it was hit and miss and there were failures amongst our many successes but I think it is fair to say our playing trading model has been a success.

But not only that, the all-important sell-on clause has also been a major feature in our deals.

And it seems that one of those may well come into play in the summer.

Kieran Tierney has been the subject of intense speculation over the last few weeks and it seems that Newcastle may well be looking to raid London for the services of the Scotland defender.

Graeme Bailey has given an update on the situation and it will be very interesting from Celtic’s perspective considering we hold a 15% sell on clause on the player:

“Sources have told 90min that Tierney has at no point questioned his role within Arsenal’s squad, but his lack of minutes has piqued the attention of a number of other clubs.

“90min understands that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta would love to keep Tierney in north London for the long-term, but the Spaniard recognises that a lack of regular first-team football may become an issue for the 35-cap Scotland international.”

With Newcastle reportedly looking to offer £30m, the Hoops could net £4.5m from any brokered deal but if there are more than one club after him, we could potentially see that figure rise significantly.

I will be leaving Vital Celtic at the end of the month but will continue to cover club news in another capacity. More details later.

  • Lanarkbhoy says:

My understanding of the sell on clause is the 15% is on the difference between the buying and selling price i.e. Celtic receiving 15% of any fee above £25m, if Newcastle get him for £30m Celtic receive £750k if the selling fee is the same or less than Arsenal paid Celtic receive 0.

We get 15%of any profit on the sale not the whole deal suret
