Another fixture, another decision by VAR that is absolutely being lambasted by Celtic fan media.

Jota’s superbly taken second-half goal was ruled offside with a VAR check last night and, after much deliberation, which included this site showing a still from the TV that suggests the Portuguese winger was onside, many fans are left unhappy that a potential goal of the season has been wiped from the record books.

But we all know what fans are like. We are passionate and love our club and can, sometimes, look at decisions that go against us with green-tinted spectacles.

But this time, it’s a little different.

This time it seems, well, just off.

And former journalist Brian McNally didn’t hold back.

Taking to Twitter last night McNally blasted:

It’s a view that will be held by many Celtic fans as we start to question VAR and the point of the new technology.

McNally went on further, “It certainly looked an excellent Jota goal in real-time.

“Until I witness some actual VAR evidence of offside to the contrary- not the dodgiest behind-play angle I’ve ever seen- I won’t change my mind.

“What we were shown last night was totally unconvincing.”

This was meant to stop ‘honest mistakes’ and take pressure off the referees but all it is doing now is raising more questions than it is answering.

I never thought I would say this but thank God the international break is coming up.

Hopefully, the month’s downtime will allow the authorities and officials to get their act together and use VAR properly.

Who are Celtic’s most capped players from these countries?

You need to get real, use var properly! They bloody are, no shame at all and no consequences for their cheating.

  • Gerry Boland says:

Honest mistakes are a thing of the past. Show the lines with the right cameras asap or You will be accused of cheating. We all know that you can edit players positions as we see it on sky tv . That is 2 dodgy offsides against Celtic they don’t show the lines. They do show the lines with Motherwell goal, why not Celtic. We all know the answer to that one. VAR means “honest mistakes”are turned into what we all knew “blatant cheating”

There is a 15 min podcast on bbc Iplayer in which ex ref Kenny Clark gives his view on how well VAR has done so far .
“It’s working the way WE want it ”

There in is the trouble with it right there

  • Kevin lee says:

This is Blatant match fixing and the Celtic Board should be getting the police fraud squad involved.

  • Kevin lee says:

What will it take for the celtic board to take action against the Corruption of scottish referees and VAR operator’s what if it came to the last game of the season and Celtic needed ONE goal to win the league but didn’t get it and miss out on £30 million would the Board then look back and think If only we challenged Jota’s so called offside goal at Fir Park. Grow a backbone and challenge every decision including Ranger’s Blatant hand ball decision against Hearts.

  • Gary Mooney says:

VAR is a fantastic idea in theory- but in reality it causes so much confusion and more controversy than ever. The idea of VAR was to act as a safety net for the officials but unfortunately it seems to be causing more issues rather than solving them.
I prefer the ‘old way’ when the human error of an official was all part of the game and were generally accepted.
Now we get spoon fed every time a goal is scored by this VAR nonsense. Fans holding off celebrating a goal- if there is no obvious offence in real time let the goal stand for the good of the game.
Final word- IF VAR was consistent I would be happy with that. Unfortunately the inconsistencies are there for all to see!

VAR is working fine, the problem is its the guys who are operating it are the ones who are the problem. I advocated for VAR ever since the penalty that wasn’t given in the Scottish cup semi final in 2016 against Inverness Caley, which really cost us a clean sweep that year, however, the problems arising now are unbelievable, absolutely mind boggling, penalties, tackles, all under the radar…….its a laughing stock. Big Jock used to say put the ball in the back of the net, and refs can’t argue with that, but the fact is, they are……ffs.

  • Joseph Mcaleer says:

Celtic fc has to take the lead as the premier league champions and call officially for a root and branch clearance of the current refereeing fraternity.

  • Paul says:

The lack of VAR views for paying TV customers is a joke. But add this to the red card that was never given for the tackle on starfelt and at least we keep our average up of at least 2 dodgy var decisions against us per game!

  • Davie Hill says:

VAR will never work in Scotland, because the refs reviewing it are the same refs who have been cheating for years. Until the referees and the SFA are answerable to some one, the cheating and the bias will continue unchallenged.
