It was a game over seventeen years ago but the memory of it still haunts former Celtic midfielder, Alan Thompson, to this day.

The year was 2004 and Thompson allegedly head butted former Rangers striker, Peter Lovendkrands, in the Glasgow Derby at Ibrox which Rangers eventually went on to win 2-0.

As the pair squared up to each other, Thompson leaned in towards Lovendkrands and the Dane immediately clutched his face and fell theatrically to the ground.  The referee sent the Celtic midfielder for an early bath for violent conduct and to this day Thompson still feels bitter about that moment.

Should Leigh Griffiths get another year at Celtic?

NO

Thompson took to twitter last night and posted a photo of the incident with numerous hashtags including #cheat, #neverared and strangely, #allymccoist.

He also included a caption of a tweet he sent to Lovenkrands in which he branded him a “100% coward”.

The former sparring partners worked together at Newcastle back in 2010 and it seemed then, at least on Thompsons end, that all was forgiven when in an interview he said,  “It’s water under the bridge now. But you look back on it and we have a physio here who was at Rangers at the time and he had it up on the internet the other day. We were all having a laugh.

“You look at it and think, ‘God, did that really happen?”

Thompson had a sucessful spell as First Team Coach at Celtic back in 2010 under Neil Lennon since retiring from football but has been out of work since being dismissed as Bury’s Assistant Manager back in 2017.
