Disappointed With a Point- Opinion

Chance after chance after chance. I’m not sure how much more European football we can watch where Celtic’s strikers are so inept at putting the ball in the back of the net.

I’m writing this in the immediate aftermath of the game and all I feel is frustration at 2 points lost. Despite the statistics of 25 goals in 6 league matches, it seems clear to anyone who has watched us this season is our inability to be deadly in front of goal. We currently have a shot to goal conversion rate of 20% this season. That is one goal every 5 shots. At home it’s 14%. While we get away with this in the SPFL, when in games we average 21 shots a game.

Even these statistics don’t really tell the whole story. How many goals in Scotland have come from poor goalkeeping, scruffy overhead kicks through goalkeepers legs, weak wristed saves? Do you think any top-class keeper in Europe couldn’t keep them out? In Europe we will never compete in the Champions League unless we become more clinical in front of goal.

Case in point tonight, we leave Warsaw with Donetsk walking away with a score draw from two shots to our twelve. Our build up play is incredible. The movement and work rate of our attackers, first class. Until we learn to take our chances and be clinical in Europe, we are going nowhere.

Disappointed with a point could have been a headline that highlighted the progress we have made in such a short space of time. In truth I’m too frustrated to write that… and I’m pretty sure Ange Postecoglou will agree.
