Olympiacos are weighing up making a renewed effort to sign Celtic defender Dedryck Boyata in January after failing to land him in the Summer transfer window, according to The Sunday Post.

The Greek club were one of three sides who chased his signature in August, with the paper reporting they had a £7m bid for the Belgian rejected, leading to the player’s dispute with the Hoops hierarchy that resulted in him refusing to play vital European fixtures.

With no progress made regarding a new contract for the defender, his current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, meaning that selling him in January might be the only realistic option for the club.

Boyata has emerged as the best defender at Celtic over the last few months, forming a formidable partnership with loanee Filip Benkovic and winning regular international caps with a highly ranked Belgium side.

The situation means that signing a centre-back next month must be a top priority for Brendan Rodgers and his recruitment team.

We’re likely to be pushed for major honours deep into the season and not replacing the 28-year-old should he leave would be a bitter blow to the quality of the first team.
