Boli Bolingoli.

Even the name conjures up memories of the absolute shambles of the ill fated ten in a row season.

An unprecedented global pandemic saw a football season kick off under an international lock down for the first time ever.

Travel between countries was limited and not advised by the Government as COVID-19 swept the country and as almost everyone abided by the rules, Bolingoli took a flight out the country without permission from the club and then appeared the following weekend against Kilmarnock.

All hell broke loose and the Belgian was the subject of intense criticism.

He barely kicked a ball again for the club.

Now at Mechelen, Bolingoli has opened up on that period.

Speaking in the Daily Record, Bolingoli said,  “I received criticism from Neil Lennon and also from Nicola Sturgeon for what happened.

“That was a mistake, just as everyone can make mistakes.

“Celtic eventually turned the page on that chapter and so have I.

“I wanted to improve further in Scotland. I played a strong first season at Celtic and we won the league.”

Bolingoli appeared just once under Ange Postecoglou in a 1-0 defeat against Livingston at the Tony Macaroni Arena and after a move to FC Ufa fell through due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, he finally ended his Celtic spell with a move back to his homeland where he has made just two league appearances so far.

No doubt Bolingoli made a mistake.

It would have been nice to have seen at least a hint of an apology to the fans for bringing unnecessary negative media coverage during one of the most important seasons in our history.
