How many times have we witnessed this happen at our club?

A player is rejected by the club at youth level but then goes on to carve out an impressive career in years to come.

Andy Robertson and Gordon Marshall are two prime examples of how making a decision too early in a player’s career can come back and bite you.

Has Celtic repeated the cycle after this latest development?

News has broken this morning that former Celtic youth goalkeeper Jude Smith is set to seal a deal to take him to English Premier League side Newcastle United.

Smith was a product of the youth system at Lennoxtown and was released by the club last season but did sign on permanently with East Fife [East Fife Official website].

After an impressive debut season, Smith then went on trial at St James’ Park last month and has done enough to convince the Tyneside club to pay a five-figure sum to the Scottish League Two side [Northern Echo].

What a turnaround in fortunes for the nineteen-year-old as he is set to learn his trade off the likes of Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka.

It will be interesting to monitor his development under the tutelage of Eddie Howe and we all at Vital Celtic wish him the best of luck in the next chapter of his career.
