Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths is under the spotlight for all the wrong reasons once again after allegedly breaking lockdown rules and is the subject of an internal investigation, according to a report in The Daily Record.

Neil Lennon confirmed after his side’s 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock that the Scotland international was carrying an injury and wouldn’t have been available for selection anyway when asked if Griffiths’s Celtic future was in doubt:

“No. The club are conducting an investigation. I’m not convinced it’s a big issue, so, hopefully, it will be resolved in a couple of days.

“He’s not fit, he’s got a calf strain at the moment, so he would have missed the game anyway.”

After returning to pre-season training unfit and overweight and with Lennon appearing to be running out of patience with the forward, a change in attitude would have been expected from Griffiths, however, he continues to be an unnecessary distraction for the Hoops gaffer.

Despite publicly praising his work rate and performance in a friendly against Hibernian, Lennon appears to be looking for a more reliable option in attack and has been linked with bringing Ivan Toney, Albian Ajeti and Steven Fletcher to the club.

Should Lennon get rid of Griffiths?

Yes

No

No

Griffiths is far from past it and as shown by his form last season, he is still capable of producing match winning moments for Celtic but he needs to “play the game” in more ways than one.

Although the incident has been played down by Lennon, it is the latest in a long line of indiscretions from his number nine, which will be the last thing he needs when trying to guide his team through what is already a highly pressurised season.
