Celtic youngster Mikey Johnston is determined to continue to work hard in an effort to impress manager Brendan Rodgers, speaking after his superb double at home to Dundee on Saturday.

Called in as the side’s central attacking force due to an injury suffered by Odsonne Edouard, the pressure was on the teenager to produce yesterday and he coped with that superbly.

Turning expertly to bamboozle the Dees defence and finish smartly in the first half, he followed that up with a rare header in the second half to bring his Celtic tally to three this season.

The youngster is delighted to be making an impact but isn’t taking anything for granted yet.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said of his current situation:

I’m just taking things day by day and not getting too far ahead of myself. I need to keep working hard and hopefully I can get more chances.

I’ve played all about the place when I was younger. It’s something you do when you’re a young player and you just try to take everything in.

If I’m asked, I’m going to play, and I just need to show that I can score goals and I can help the team out.

For now I’ll just keep working very hard and hopefully I can get into the team.

The young player will have even more hype behind his sails after his last two performances, but it’s pleasing to hear he is ready to shut that out and focus on finding consistency in his game.

He’ll have surely been inspired by the recent emergence of Ryan Christie into the first-team and knows that if he continues to put maximum effort in then he can displace regular starters in Rodgers’ eleven.

We can’t wait to see what’s next for the homegrown talent.
