The rumours of Matt O’Riley attracting attention from the EPL will fill the Celtic fans with dread.

Fortunately for us, for a move to take place, it seems that Newcastle needs to be successful in attempting to sign James Maddison from Leicester City.

With Brendan Rodgers revealing that the player is not for sale, that should give the fans a sense of relief.

O’Riley signed for Celtic in January of last season for just over £1m from MK Dons and he arrived at the club as a relatively unknown quantity.

It didn’t take long for the midfielder to endear himself to the fans after his debut against Hearts.

But it was not just his ability on the ball that made the Celtic fans fall in love with him.

His humility and enthusiasm in pre and post match interviews also endear him to the supporters.

And it is not only the fans that have been impressed by him.

Ross County boss, Malky Mackay is also an admirer of the 21-year-old.

Speaking to The Press and Journal, Mackay was glowing in his praise for O’Riley and the Celtic manager for discovering him, “He is one of those diamonds you talk about finding.

“Matt O’Riley is of the sort we used to talk about, certainly at my first club Watford.

“The fact that they’ve gone and found Matt O’Riley is a fantastic piece of business because I think he’s a wonderful young player.

“It’s a credit to Ange and the football club’s tentacles to make sure that they get one like that as well as opposed to paying big money for everybody.”

O’Riley certainly has been a find and is proof that you don’t need to go and look to your bank account to spend millions to get quality.

You just need to look in the right places.
