This is the second pundit in so many days to have a go Celtic’s Japanese transfers.

Michael Stewarts take I wrote about last night, but this one has really left me scratching my head.

Hugh Keevins is well known for his controversial takes and opinions on Celtic. He is very outspoken and regular readers of my blog will know just how much his comments seem to rub the Celtic fans the wrong way.

But in his column [The Daily Record] Hugh makes an incredible claim that seems to suggest that the club have not done their sums on the Japanese deals, “Cutting Celtic’s deal-makers some slack is like the television adverts at this time of year which end with the words ‘Please drink responsibly’.

“No-one’s paying any attention. In the long term, the fans want a permanent deal done for Cameron Carter-Vickers and Spurs are thought to want £10m for him.

“Jota is a done deal if Celtic pay Benfica the £6.5m buy-out clause in his contract.

“And, in the short term, the final tally for as many as three new signings from Japan has yet to be added up by the club accountants.

“All of which has to be done before knowing if you’ll be allowed to earn the money to pay your existing bills – and players’ wages – at some time in the immediate future.”

Is Hugh suggesting that the money men at Celtic Park just glibly signed off on all three deals for Hatate, Ideguchi and Maeda without taking into account the financial implications of COVID?

Or is he saying a Celtic board, that are notorious for making a profit year after year and looking after Celtic’s finances more prudently than the supporters would care for year on year, don’t have a  clue what they will be paying out in fees and wages and are risking the clubs financial short term future?

It really is a strange opinion to have without any key facts to back this up?

It’s also a strange view to take since this Celtic board are better than most in the Scottish game at looking after their finances and making sure their shareholders are suitably rewarded year on year, much to the annoyance of the Hoops fans.

  • Ballybough says:

I a agree with everything you say except the final bit about making sure that the shareholders are suitably rewarded year after year, as a shareholder since wee Fergus came I have never had a penny out of Celtic for the ordinary shares I hold ,what I do get is Fixed dividend on the preferential shares I hold which by the way like a lot of shareholders is re-invested in ordinary shares. These preference shares have no voting power in the business of Celtic and are more like a loan

Due to ignorance, bias, bigotry or simple incompetence, there are some so-called journalists who don’t deserve any respect or followers.
I think it’s fair to say keevins is up close to the top of that table.
I haven’t read anything he has written in several years and probably won’t anytime soon.

Keevins comments on this topic proves he knows as much about business as he does about impartial journalism, its plebs like Keevins that give honest and trustworthy journalists a bad name, I wonder would you ever change your topic, say to pottery or knitting issues, you might get some respect in that area, because the jealousy and bias views is oozing from your pours about Celtic. The Bhoys know your a joke anyway.
