Chris Sutton has to be the biggest Celtic personality out there.

Ever since his move in 2000, he has lived and breathed Celtic and continues to do so with his excellent punditry.

Sutton is not only an ambassador for Celtic, he also talks up Scottish football and regularly defends it from the snobbery down south.

But it could have been so different all those years ago as the big Englishman reveals the main reason he put pen to paper on a contract at Celtic.

Speaking on the Currie Club podcast, Darrell asked Sutton if he looks back on his time in Glasgow fondly.

Sutton replied, “Yes. When I’d done everything in England, I’d won the Premier League and the Golden Boot I had a poor season at Chelsea.

“I had a few options of where I could move to. I could have gone to Spurs, I could have gone to Middlesbrough but Martin had just gone north of the border and Celtic had done poorly the previous season.

“And it wasn’t too difficult a decision in the end because of Martin. That’s why I went north of the border and the fact that he was serious about really pushing Celtic forward.

“Celtic, I knew had some good players.

“It was an easy decision in the end.

“But I wasn’t totally comfortable with it.

“I’d never been up to Glasgow in the I’d been up to watch a game actually ended up in the Hoops Bar with the Blackburn Rovers team many many years ago and there was a big scrap and I was thinking Blimey, this city’s mental.”

Thank goodness for Martin O’Neill.

Could you imagine if Sutton hadn’t become a Celt and how different our history could have looked as there is no doubt we would never have had anywhere near the amount of success without Sutton in the side.

And could you imagine the lost hours of endless entertainment he gives the Celtic fans on social media?

Doesn’t bear thinking about.
