As the curtain draws on a season that started with so much promise and delivered so little, the focus of attention now goes onto the rebuild job required at Celtic Park under the new manager. Many predict the manager to be Eddie Howe, but as yet, there is no one under the silhouette of the Jock Stein stand holding a scarf aloft.

As the fans wait patiently (or not)  on the announcement, they are also intrigued at what type of player will be incoming to start the job of taking the title back off our Glasgow rivals.

Next season is huge. The winners of the Scottish Premiership earn the right for automatic entry into the Champions League Group stages so it is vital that the club get the appointment and the recruitment 100% correct.

What we cannot afford is letting players who will be integral to the rebuild leave or think of leaving at this time of transition but BBC pundit Michael Stewart, is of the opinion that that is exactly what may be going through the head of Callum McGregor.

McGregor has spent his whole career at Celtic Park and Stewart, speaking on BBC Sportsound, reckons that with a regime coming in, the influential midfielder may be thinking of moving on to try something new, “I think he is an integral part of Celtic. He is a huge player for them. He’s a great player.

Which area of the team requires the most investment?

“He is a potential captain, there’s no doubt about that. But that’s why I think the business of getting the manager in place should have been done a long time ago to try to make sure that those players who are integral to moving forward, are there to stay.

“The longer you let it draft on, I just think there’s just a feeling that maybe he’s,  I don’t know, just thinking of a different challenge something new.”

Should McGregor think to leave or does indeed move on, along with the loss of captain Scott Brown, this would be a monumental disaster for the club and all the stops should be pulled out by the board to ensure this doesn’t happen.
