Didier Agathe was a Celtic phenomenon.

Bought for £50k from Hibs back in 2000, the French right wing back was always remembered and feared for his blistering pace on the right flanks.

His ability to go past opposition players with ease, even if they had a five yard start, was legendary and he was, of course, on of the major stars of the all conquering Martin O’Neill side that went to the UEFA Cup Final in Seville in 2003.

But his rise to football stardom was anything but as quick as his pace.

Agathe opened up [The Sun] on when he first arrived in Scotland after signing for Raith Rovers, and his tale really is quite incredible, “I had never even been in Scotland before. I didn’t know where I was.

“They didn’t have any free rooms [a hotel in Kirkaldy] so I had to stay and sleep in the place where they keep all the cleaning stuff!

“Colin McGowan, who was a director, was like a dad to me and there is a funny story about a caravan park.

“The hotel I was staying in cost too much for the club, so they had to find me somewhere else to stay.

“Colin is still a great friend of mine. But that day he showed me hundreds of caravans — and told me to choose one!

“It was a caravan park that was at the top of a hill and I said to him, ‘I am not staying here.

“But when I scored more goals, they moved me out of the hotel and into a very nice house.

“I still laugh about this with Colin to this day. We joke about it a lot.

A surreal tale and a far cry from sleeping in a hotel cleaning cupboard to the glamour of European final.
