“I smell a rat” – Chris Sutton at his brilliant best

There are not many pundits I read and agree with. Especially ex Celtic players. Fans of the club have a long standing dislike of certain ex players who’s only job, it seems, is to stick the boot into the club at every available opportunity.

We all know who they are and to be honest, they’ll be busy scribbling away and scrabbling for the phone to scream blue murder at the events of the last twenty four hours. And this time they are correct to do so. So they get a free pass. For today only.

But one guy I have a lot of time for, and to be honest, so do the majority of the Celtic fans, is Chris Sutton.

Sutton is fair in his praise and criticism of the club but is the ONLY ex player in the media, in my opinion, that plays up and defends not only the club, but Scottish football as a whole.

So when he speaks, I tend to listen. And he’s spoken, open and honestly, about the Eddie Howe debacle in his latest column, “I do smell a rat though. There has always been the nagging question of why it was taking so long. I said in these pages last week that my first question for Howe if he took charge would be why has it taken so long?

“Now the big question is, has he taken Celtic for a ride? Was he holding out for a Premier League job all along? Has he been given the sniff of one?”

And I agree with him. Celtic’s shambles of a statement absolving not only Howe, but themselves, of any blame for the deal breaking down is a backside covering, whitewash load of word salad that confirms who’s to blame 100% for this amateur hour.

The board.

Three months of waiting for Howe and, if this is to be believed, the backroom team all of a sudden decide they didn’t fancy Glasgow?

Did someone in the midst of this deal at Celtic not think to pick up the phone, tell them that Celtic are located a couple of hundred miles north of the seaside and ASK them if they fancied it? Anyone?

Sutton is bang on the money here. There is a rat at play here. Or many of them.  And they are taking the Celtic fans for mugs.
