The Conor McGregor story is a fascinating one. Not for the first time, the outspoken Irishman has spoken about having some involvement in Celtic and he took to twitter a couple of weeks ago to express his intention, or hope might be a better word, of eventually taking over control of Paradise.
It’s fair to say the announcement was met with mixed reactions from the Celtic fans but it did spark finance expert Dr Dan Plumley to run the numbers to see if it was viable for the MMA fighter to take over the Hoops.
Speaking to Football Insider, Plumley said, “There are a lot of things you can’t measure.
“It’s not an exact science deciphering how much a club is worth. Things like history and heritage play into it as well.
“But based on a few models of revenue and equity, Celtic’s enterprise value has hovered between £90m and £140m in the last few years.
“However, looking at in terms of the revenue they generated and the stadium, I think closer to £150m is a good evaluation.
“McGregor’s net worth is £150m. So theoretically, he is wealthy enough but you are taking all of his net worth to buy the club if it’s him on his own.”
Whether McGregor has any intention to go through with this is irrelevant unless majority shareholder Dermot Desmond announces he is willing to sell his stake in the club and that doesn’t seem to be in the offing anytime in the near future.
As for McGregor being at the helm at Celtic, I think this is best avoided as the publicity and media furore that would surround this move may be more trouble than it’s actually worth.
You forget one thing. To be the major shareholder you only need a little over 50% not the full 100%
McGregor can’t be allowed to be anywhere near Celtic.
I wouldnt sell him a mug in the Club shop. Horrible individual that should not be anywhere near Celtic.
£150Million eh? To think that just prior to becoming extinct, the old rangers were sold for £1:00!
Yeah, that’s about right🤷🏼♂️
Heaven help us if that individual took us over.
