This is a strange comment for John Hartson to make.

Just as the club have made great inroads in the transfer market to stabilise the playing staff, Hartson has said that now might be the time for Celtic Assistant Manager John Kennedy to leave the club should Danish side FC Midtjylland make an approach.

The Danish side knocked the Parkhead side out of the Champions League in the second qualifying round last season 3-2 on aggregate, but they have sacked manager Bo Henrikson after a poor start to the season saw the Danes pick up just five points from their opening four league matches.

There have been rumours that Kennedy is on the shortlist to take over from Henrikson [Daily Record] but, as yet, no contact has been made by the Danish club.

But Hartson reckons that should they come calling, Kennedy should take the opportunity.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show [via Football Scotland], Hartson said, “Nothing has come out of Celtic and Ange hasn’t said his assistant is leaving.

“But I’ll give my comments. I think it might be time, if Harry Kewell has come in, Gavin Strachan is there… I think John will have picked up some valuable experience working with some great managers.

“I wish John well. I was at the club when he got that injury, tragic. He’s had a great run at Celtic but maybe it is the right time for John to go and show he can be a number one.”

Kennedy splits the opinion of the Celtic supporters. Many believe he should have gone with Neil Lennon after the disastrous ten-in-a-row season but Ange Postecoglou personally named the coach as one of the key men to Celtic’s success last season [Football Scotland].

Could Kennedy cope with being the number one at a club? His experience of working under such managers as Brendan Rodgers, Neil Lennon and, of course, Ange Postecoglou should stand him in good stead.
