An interesting debate caught my eye recently on Twitter concerning defender Erik Sviatchenko.
He’s a player with obvious physical attributes in terms of his size but I do think he lacks the pace to really become a massive success for us in the future.
To me, he’s a player you’d keep around for experience but perhaps not make a first-team starter on the regular – I’d sooner sign someone else to upgrade on him.
With that in mind, then, Celtic Gossip on Twitter has asked our fans what we could see happening with the centre-half, so let’s take a look at the response:
Does Erik Sviatchenko deserve another chance at @CelticFC ? Let me know what you think HH

I always liked him, when he’s on his game he can be excellent.

My personal view is he can do a job in the SPL but his lack of pace leads to trouble in Europe. But CH is a partnership & have been many examples of a slower CH working well with someone with pace. So in Brendan we trust HH

He has all the attributes to be a success at Celtic, I’m hoping he’s the next success story of the Rodgers area

I can’t agree.
Not got the height or pace IMO.— John Tucker (@john7tucker) May 23, 2018
Don’t think he’s ever had as many bomb-scare performances as Boyata, for example. However, Boyata has been given a second chance and proved himself imo. Erik deserves the same.

Struggled with an injury but was getting back to form when we let him go. Doing great now so why not give him a chance? I still say bring in another CB along with him though

IMO, for Europe, we need much better. Always loved Erik’s mentality but I think we need an experienced head to partner Ajer.

Sent away for a reason

Distribution from the back is exceptional. Too many injuries though. For me, I would have him in for Boyata but big Dedryck has done well with his limited capabilities. HH

The Verdict
There’s a bit of a mixture here to say the least.
He’s obviously a hard worker and is committed but we also need to ensure we keep improving as a club and team.
I’d keep him around and give him another chance, I think, but not in place of getting in someone new and better to come into the side.
A big summer probably awaits for him to prove himself.
