Celtic have been boosted in their reported pursuit of midfielder Nick Powell, after journalist Alan Nixon suggested that Wigan are already seeking a replacement.

The Hoops were linked with a move for the in-form English Championship midfielder back in September, with The Sun reporting that a contract offer was being prepared for the former Manchester United man.

His current deal at Wigan expires at the end of this season and there appears to be little chance of him signing up to a new deal.

Alan Nixon reported on Twitter that the Latics were looking to Everton youngster Kieran Dowell as a direct replacement for the 24-year-old.

Powell has scored four goals and assists five times in 15 Championship appearances this season and is rated as worth £2.7m by Transfermarkt.

With the Hoops still looking for midfield reinforcements in the wake of Stuart Armstrong’s departure, Powell could fit the bill.

After injuries to Eboue Kouassi and question marks about Scott Brown’s fitness, midfield progress in January is essential with or without the Wigan man.
