It was being reported yesterday that long-serving Celtic skipper Scott Brown was being tempted with an offer from Australian league side Western Melbourne as he slowly begins eyeing the day that he’ll hang up his boots.

The 33-year-old midfielder made the switch to Parkhead from Hibernian back in the summer of 2007 for a reported £4.4million fee and with well over 400 career appearances to his name in our shirt, and some very important goals across that time, his fee was an absolute snip in hindsight.

Sky Sports have claimed that the A-League side have offered him at least a two-year deal and although there’s no expectation that anything will happen this month, the offer, if accepted, would see him make the move down-under next summer when he becomes a free agent.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers admitted it was a possibility that he’d be talking to other clubs given his contract situation, but again he wasn’t expecting to lose him this month.

“I won’t be surprised if there are a few clubs interested in him coming into his last year. He loves it here, loves being here. But sometimes towards the end of a career, players can get offered a financial reward for two or three years that they may not get again in their life.”

Given his long service, whilst his departure wouldn’t be encouraged, we do need to look to the future and no one could begrudge him a final payday in sunnier climes.
