Massive task for Celtic

Celtic face a real mountain to climb after Efe Ambrose was sent-off in their Champions League third qualifying round first-leg 4-1 defeat at Legia Warsaw.

Callum McGregor earned the visitors an early lead but Miroslav Radovic struck twice before Ambrose was dismissed on the stroke of half-time.

Warsaw made sure they took advantage with Michal Zyro and substitute Jakub Kosecki both on target during the final six minutes. The hosts also missed two penalties.

It had begun well for the Scottish champions with McGregor curling an opener beyond goalkeeper Dusan Kuciak on eight minutes.

Moments later, however, Radovic’s low shot evaded Celtic keeper Fraser Forster at his near post and the scores were back level.

Kris Commons lifted over in reply before Ambrose only half-cleared and Serbian marksman Radovic forced in his second of the night.

Goalscorer McGregor soon called Kuciak into action but the visitors’ hopes were damaged again when Ambrose was ruled to have fouled danger-man Radovic and shown a red card as last man.

Warsaw almost extended their advantage after the break as Forster kept out Radovic before Charlie Mulgrew was penalised inside his own area but Ivica Vdoljak wastefully struck his penalty wide.

However, Legia still made it 3-1 as the closing moments approached when Zyra headed in Radovic’s cross. And it could have been even worse with Mulgrew penalised again but Forster saved another Vdoljak spot-kick.

Celtic weren’t about to be let off too lightly though as substitute Kosecki sidefooted home a decisive fourth goal in added time.
