On this day 2004 – Celtic 2-1 Dundee Utd

|

I love a blast from the past piece. Not so much for the result or the quality of the game or even the goals, but mainly to look back at past players and the quality of squad we have had at our disposal in years gone by.

Todays piece is from a home victory against DundeeUtd back in 2004. As Celtic led the charge to the lead title, the Hoops picked up three points to stretch their lead at the top of the table against a Dundee Utd side that boasted the likes of Mark Wilson, Barry Robson, Derek McInnes and Charlie Miller.

Celtic had outstanding quality in their side that season. The line up had not changed much from the team that got us to the UEFA Cup Final the previous season. The team boasted the likes of Larson, Sutton, Lennon, Petrov and Balde and were virtually unstoppable on their way to the title scoring an outstanding 105 goals and only conceding 25.

Seventeen points separated the Hoops from their closest rivals, Rangers, as they won the title amassing 98 points.

United took a shock lead when Robson whipped in a cross from a free kick and Utd player Archibald poked the ball past ‘keeper Rab Douglas.  It took until the 80th minute for Celtic to get the breakthrough when Shaun Maloney placed a well timed cross from Sutton into the back of the net.

Just over a minute later Celtic took the lead after a controversial penalty was awarded when Petrov was sent tumbling in the box and Sutton tucked the ball away confidently.

What a team that was and what talent graced the Celtic Park turf that year. I only wish we had that likes again.
