Vital Celtic want to thank guest writer Allan Grogan for this guest piece on Callum McGregor

In an episode of the West Wing when President Bartlett allowed Congress to shut down rather than cave to the Republican Speaker of the House, the then Vice President was doubtful of Bartletts show of strength, saying…

“You know what you call a leader without followers? Just a guy taking a walk.”

Someone who has gained plenty of followers for his leadership has been our own leading player, Callum McGregor.

There has never been any doubt in Cal Mac’s ability as a footballer, he is a premium player and for me the best midfielder in Scotland.

Concerns were raised as how he would be able to step out from the shadow of Scott Brown’s leadership and questions were asked as to whether he could galvanise the troops, especially after the crushing disappointment of last season.

Very early on in this season McGregor proved we had no need to doubt him, he has led by example, with stunning consistency throughout the season, supporting those coming into the team.

More than that though, he has displayed an instinctive ability to know when we have needed him.

From the mini huddle at the end of the Dundee game in August, to the bravery in coming back so soon after a facial injury, to the hounding of Rangers players in the rout at Celtic Park.

Much like Bartlett in that West Wing episode, McGregor has a steel about him that has surprised many fans, and the most exciting part is, he’s just getting started.
