Lots of Celtic fans have been getting involved in a rather fascinating debate on social media.
Oh how good it would be to have these kinds of nights back again some time in the future. Nothing against Manchester City, but there was just something different about these games, maybe it’s because we actually had a chance of going far in the competition in those days.
Wednesday marked the 50th anniversary of one of the more historic nights in the club’s history as we defeated Leeds United 1-0 in the first leg of the 1969-70 European Cup on our way to reaching the final, in what was called a ‘Battle of Britain’.
Are you struggling to cope without football to watch on a regular basis?
Yes
No
And to commemorate the occasion, the club decided to run a poll on Twitter to see which of our previous games against English opponents was the fan’s favourites. There were plenty to choose from, and although the 2002/03 game against Liverpool won the poll, it seemed as though the faithful weren’t too happy with that outcome.
It has to be Leeds.
Biggest ever European crowd (still to be beaten 136.5k)
Best in England and Scotland (not just of that season but of that era).
European Cup semi-final.
Only beating the English Champs in the CL Final could top this.

I don’t see how beating an English club who finished 5th in the epl in the uefa cup Q/F can be better than beating the English champions in the semi final of the european cup.

Leeds
Away from home against a team who had got to the semi finals without conceding a goal.

Before my time but Leeds is the most impressive victory for me. Though it could be argued Celtic were one of the best teams in Europe at the time so beating a team of similar standing wasn’t as impressive as beating the financial behemoths of Liverpool & Man U.

Weren’t Leeds daubed ‘Team of the Century’ back then…ha ha! Despatched home and away. 👍💚🍀
