Report – Null and void should be considered as “act of God” puts halt to Celtic’s 9-in-a-row quest

The Daily Record has provided another opinion on the one option that is apparently off the table for the SPFL’s resolution to completing the 2019/20 season.

Graeme Sharp, formerly of Everton, has declared that null and void is the only way forward to resolve an apparent “act of God” in the aftermath of the SPFL voting saga that has left Dundee holding all the cards.

The former Scotland international said of the crisis facing football in the country both north and south of the border:

“I would gladly just shut down the league, declare it null and void and we start back when we can.

“It’s a shame for Liverpool as they won’t win the Premier League title and for Leeds and West Brom in the Championship as they were hoping to get promotion, but this is an act of God and I can’t see football coming back for a long, long time.

“Start next season in August or September and this is the way it’s got to go. There are too many permutations in terms of giving the league to Liverpool and saying Celtic are champions in Scotland, with Hearts getting relegated. You can’t do that.

“Teams might go on a run and get out of relegation, so I just think you have to call a halt to it, declare it null and void and make that decision soon.”

League reconstruction remains the most likely outcome and with it being reported that clubs would be subjected to financial penalties for declaring the season null and void, it is still the nuclear option out of all those available.

From which club did Celtic sign Henrik Larsson?

With Dundee seemingly changing their mind, from a no to yes vote – which would’ve seen Celtic declared champions – they were dealt a blow with Partick Thistle’s statement questioning the legality of the SPFL and the Tayside club’s actions which forced them into a re-think.

Despite the league’s amateur handling of the crisis, Celtic should still be crowned Scottish Premiership and 9-in-a-row champions when a decision is eventually reached as they look for a solution that causes the least amount of financial damage and impact on the 2020/21 season.
