Celtic could be on the hunt for a centre-back on deadline day after Filip Benkovic suffered an ankle injury, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

The impressive on-loan defender is out for at least four weeks, with his ankle in a boot, after picking up the knock against Hamilton at the weekend.

He completed the 90 minutes but the issue became apparent in the dressing room post-match.

It’s a serious blow to Brendan Rodgers’ squad and highlights how precarious the defensive line is. With Dedryck Boyata also out injured, we have been left short for upcoming crucial matches.

The Sun reckon that’s cause enough for the manager to see what is on the market today in the position, as well as pursuing a right-back to compete with veteran Swede Mikael Lustig.

Fans have been desperately calling for the club to sign a quality first-team centre-back all month, calls which have so far been resisted, so it will be interesting to see if the club respond over the next few hours.

Boyata and Benkovic may be injured, but their long-term future at the club is just as shaky, with both due to leave Celtic Park at the end of the season.

Forward planning needs to start now and hopefully Brendan Rodgers, Peter Lawwell and the rest of the recruitment team can pull something out of the bag today.
