Celtic could be set to “lose out” on potential target Rodrigo Riquelme with the Spanish youth international currently training at Reading ahead of a potential loan move.

The 20-year old has just a year left to run on his current deal at Atletico Madrid, however, the La Liga giants are hoping to extend his deal prior to giving the thumbs up to any potential move away from the Metropolitano Stadium.

It was reported only a week ago that the Hoops had “asked” about Riquelme but, as yet, no concrete offer has been made by the recruitment team, however, you would like to think that if Neil Lennon and co did make their move, that the prospect of winning trophies and European football would edge a move to the second tier of English football.

Riquelme could be a hit in Scottish football, his dribbling ability, pace and creativity could cause all sorts of problems as well as being able to adapt to any role behind a central striker, the perfect foil for Odsonne Edouard.

Should Lennon hijack Reading's move for Riquelme?

There is also the added bonus that he has already been on the winning side against Rangers – albeit their academy side – after single handedly dismantling the Ibrox outfit by providing assists for every goal in a comfortable 4-0 win in the UEFA Youth League.

The gaffer will still want to bring in one or two new additions and Riquelme would add extra competition and quality to keep the likes of James Forrest and Mohamed Elyounoussi on their toes, think Patrick Roberts with more flair and you get a hint of what could be in store – if it isn’t too late.
