Selling manager comments on Celtic summer transfer target – ‘prize asset’ would be an exciting buy

|

Celtic are interested in signing Mexican defender Edson Alvarez this summer, according to The Scottish Sun, but a face a battle to secure his transfer.

The paper say that the Hoops are one of a number of European clubs, alongside Ajax, Fiorentina and PSV, that are interested in his services after impressive form for Mexican outfit Club America.

However, America recognise his value and have slapped a £9m price tag on his shoulders, potentially pricing Celtic out of a move for the defender, the report explains.

The 21-year-old centre-back has significant potential having achieved plenty in his career so far, including scoring the winning goals to deliver a league title for his club, winning 20 caps for his country and already playing at a World Cup.

With over 100 senior appearances to his name already, he ticks all the boxes for Celtic when it comes to scouting defenders.

His manager Miguel Herrera is obviously a big fan and has spoken recently about all the transfer speculation, confirming he is ready to leave for European football.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, the Club America boss said:

Edson is getting stronger every day, he is maturing as a footballer. To be almost a first pick for Mexico at the age of 21 is extraordinary.

This summer he will go to European football and continue his development. It’s been well documented several clubs are looking at him. But he is a prize asset for us and his transfer fee will reflect that.

The reported £9m fee would ordinarily rule Celtic out of the running for any player but as demonstrated last summer with the acquisition of striker Odsonne Edouard, the Hoops are now willing to dig deep if it means signing the right player, with the right profile, who can improve the first-team and eventually be sold for big money.

Alvarez would certainly appear to have that profile and we know Celtic are in need of defenders this summer. Dedryck Boyata looks certain to leave upon the expiration of his contract and Filip Benkovic is heading back to parent club Leicester City.

Can we pull off a signing coup and unveil the Mexican international at Celtic Park?

Is Edson Alvarez the calibre of player we should be looking at this summer? Have your say in the comments below…
