The Ryan Porteous booing demonstrates where the toxic element in The Tartan Army resides

Just this week, I had written that the Tartan Army’s booing of the Ireland national anthem and James McClean had opened a fracture in the Celtic support.

Some fans claimed that there was nothing wrong with it as they supported their country whilst other Celtic fans claimed that anti-Irish racism was rife in the Scotland support.

Last night, as the country prepared to face Ukraine in Poland, a section of the Scotland support, bizarrely, decided to boo Ryan Porteous’ name as he was set to make his full international debut.

A shameful act that just doesn’t make any sense to me.

Why the hell would anyone want to boo a player from your own country in one of the biggest games in Scotland’s history?

That in itself is telling as there is a certain club in Scotland whose fan base has a particular dislike for the Hibs defender but as he once famously said, “Do I look happy?“.

If you search on Twitter, you will see that there are Celtic supporting Scotland fans that have shared their experiences within the Scotland support and I have to say it does not make good reading if all these stories are true.

I’ll let you make up your own mind as to what football team(s) these issues lie within the Scotland support.

It’s the dreaded international break. So take away the boredom and try our *BRAND NEW* quiz. Who are Celtic’s most capped players from these countries?

I gave up on Scotland many years ago when the Scotland fans booed Tommy Burns when he was replacing Alec McDonald of Rangers during an international at Hamdump.
Never been back since and don’t miss it in the slightest.

Well remember a so called fan giving Shaun Maloney grief – purely on the basis that he was a Celtic player.

Agreed. Scotland is part of the UK. Fly the Union Jack and so called support your country. But in reality the National team consists of many Celtic Bhoys. Some with the club and many who have wore the hoops or who have always been mad supporters of our brilliant club. Walk down the roster and tell me different. Robertson, Tierney, McGinn, McGregor, Trumbull, Taylor, Armstrong, Gordon, Hickey etc. I could go on. So the BAWBAGS across the river can go take a shite and slide in it when it comes to who actually supports Scotland. Their fenian crap doesn’t hold salt. Scottish Irish blood understands that you can support the best club in the world, Celtic, and still have a love for the country you are from, Scotland. It’s actually okay and not that difficult to understand. Mon the Hoops and Scotland!!!!

I stopped going to watch Scotland way back in 1969, yes l know that was in the ‘olden days’ to many of you but I’m 72 now and remember it well against Brazil. The hun centre Half McKinnon (Billy McNeil twice the player) booted the ball out of the penalty area into the path of a Brazilian and l shouted something like ‘ffs watch what your doing you clown’. Next minute I’m told eff off ya Fenian bastard and such. I had to eff off for my own safety. OK, I was in the hun end at the time and I wasn’t allowed to criticise any hun player.
Same game, l think, wee Jinky was getting jeered whenever he got the ball as the huns chanted for one of theirs, Willie Henderson, to replace Jinky. Toxic atmosphere and all down to them. Never went to another game. Nowadays they support England and their queen…. oops…. King.
    Stuff them all.

Speaking as a Hibby I can perfectly understand why one particular set of fans would boo Porto. After all he did do the “fu****g zombies” walk. What’s more, he loves a windup and relishes the hostile feedback. Kinda like another ex Hibby who went on to do great things at your club.
