I just wish, for once, football pundits would engage their brain before making idiotic comments.

Especially those former Celtic players who, you would hope, would know the mood of the fans.

Davie Provan sticks his foot in it again with his latest anti Celtic rant on Go Radio ahead of tomorrow nights crucial fixture against Bayer Leverkusen.

Provan, a well known Celtic critic, went in two footed with a stupid allegation that even when I heard it, I had to check if he actually ever played for the club, “I love Bitton. I  know a lot of the Celtic fans don’t want him. Don’t rate him.

“I think he’s a proper football. e also gives Celtic the option if they want to make a change, he can play two positions.

“He can step back and play at the back tomorrow night.

“I would hope that he and Callum McGregor will be told to protect the centre backs, stay goal side for most of the game. Don’t go chasing it and  don’t empty the midfield.

“I hope McGregor is told to play more defensively tomorrow. That pair, when the fullbacks are caught up on the pitch and they will be at times.

“The two of them can get out into the wide area if they have to. But predominantly, he needs to play two holding players tomorrow.”

Where to even start. Celtic fans do rate Bitton. Always have. But only if he plays in his more natural position.

The fans only had an issue with Bitton’s performances at centre half as he clearly struggles in that position. And who’s fault was that?

Provan’s old friend, Neil Lennon.

It was Lennon who first adopted Bitton to the centre half role and persisted with it even though every man and their dog could see he was not fit for purpose there.

In Bitton’s first season at the club, when he was utilised as a holding midfielder, the man bossed it. It is his ineptitude at centre half the fans were fud up of.

Not the player.

Surely even Provan should know that? Shouldn’t he?

Many fans were fed up with Bitton in the middle with Delia then Rodgers. It was Rodgers that played him at centre half first. Proven is still an idiot.

Somehow, Bitton is no longer a poor, bombscare of a player that I’ve witnessed for over almost a decade. Many football fans have short-term memories with unsubstantiated optimism for a player who can neither tackle, jump for or head the ball, or stop making stupid challenges. I could go on……
