“This is a club I respect a lot” – Mystifying quote from French legend on Celtic managers job

As Vital Celtic reported yesterday, French legend Thierry Henry was the new name thrown into the hat for the vacant Celtic managers position.  Henry is just recently out of management after leaving American MLS side Montreal Impact in February this year citing family reasons.

Henry gained his first job in management at French Ligue 1 side, Monaco, in October 2018 where after just twenty games in charge, he was dismissed after taking the Rouges et Blancs (Red and Whites)  into the relegation drop zone with a 20% win percentage.

In November 2019, he took over at Montreal Impact where he was the top man for 29 games but then left after just over three months in charge. With yet another poor 30% win ratio, Henry’s start to club management has been poor to say the least.

According to The Daily Mail, Henry has been “keeping an eye” on Scottish football and has declared his availability for the Celtic post, “With all humility, whatever is going to come my way – I’m not saying that should come my way.

“Whatever is going to come my way I’m going to try to evaluate. I’m sure they’re going to work on what they’re going to work on. 

“I don’t know what’s happening there, this is a club I respect a lot, but that I don’t know about.”

It really is a strange and confusing quote with a hint of the Pedro Caixinha’s “dogs and caravans” about it. The quote tells us nothing but also tells us everything.  For me, Henry is not interested in the Celtic job per se, but he is clever and knows that if he references such a high profile management position it alerts other clubs to his availability.

The Hoops board would do well to avoid any contact with the former World Cup winner, not only because of his poor track record in management, but he would be off at the slightest hint of interest from another club from one of the elite leagues.  Remind you of anyone?
