According to Stephen McGowan, Celtic have Dundee United’s number 1 Benjamin Siegrist high on their list of replacements for the recent departure of Vasilis Barkas. Siegrist’s contract at United expires in the summer making him a free agent. The Swiss keeper made 32 appearances this season helping the club reach European football next season.

Benjamin Siegrist is a great shot stopper who made important saves in big games that contributed to some massive results for the club. However, a weakness of Siegrist is his distribution with the ball at his feet. In the modern day, goalkeepers, to be considered world class, have to be able to play out with their feet as well as keeping the ball out of the net. This makes the transfer sound less appealing as Ange’s Celtic love to start the attack from the back and the goalkeeper plays a massive role in getting the play underway.

This transfer does not appeal to me as I think Celtic should be looking in the market for goalkeepers who are more than capable of playing out from the back. Especially with the club being back in the Champions League next year as they will be under pressure from every area of the park and the keeper will play a key role in keeping composure throughout the team.

The signing of Benjamin Siegrist would also push Tobi Oluwayemi further down the pecking order of goalkeepers at the club. This isn’t great for the club as this young man, who has been involved with the first team for the majority of the season, lacks vital playing minutes. Celtic have recently lost Vincent Angelini who was a promising young keeper to Watford. This could be repeated if Celtic go through with the deal which could again result in the club losing another young talent.

He’ll have plenty of time to practice. It’s not as if he’s going to walk into the team with Hart there right now. I reckon he’ll have a season to get up to Angespeed if he does sign.

Barkas was supposed to be such a keeper, give me a keeper that can save a ball anyday

  • John says:

I’m with you John A. Distribution and playing with the ball at his feet is not one of Joe Hart’s strong points either but I defy anyone to suggest he didn’t have a great season
