Celtic are one of the truly global teams in world football. Despite being hampered by the financial deficiencies of Scottish football, our club has a global reach.

The most encouraging aspect of the appointment of Dominic McKay was his understanding that the overseas market was an area we had not exploited to the best of our ability. When domestically there is only so much money available, and Champions League funds can’t be counted on every year, developing new markets abroad is crucial to enhancing our financial stability. Despite the early exit of McKay, the board seem to be grasping this quickly with the Sydney Super Cup playing host to the gaffer’s homecoming. The more engagement we have in these markets the more sustainable our partnerships will be regardless of who the current manager/players are.

As someone who lived and worked in South Korea prior to and after we signed Ki Sung Yueng and Cha Du Ri the explosion of the Celtic brand was immediate, A country which was only concerned with English Premier League and in particular Manchester United suddenly had swarms of green and white hoop shirts, and SPFL games on TV. While we didn’t fully take advantage of this by not touring pre-season there, it shows the potential within Asian markets. We already have a strong connection with Japan through Shunsuke Nakamura, now with our quartet of Japanese players this is an opportunity to take a hold on this market to ensured continual growth and financial development.

I have friends in Brisbane who told me “Used to be if you saw someone in town with a Celtic top on you felt you had to speak to them and connect. Now they say it is no Biggie,it is a reasonably common sight seeing someone in the hoops in town.Leaving aside the expat side of things, this is no doubt down to the Ange factor.
