“Wouldn’t want to say for certain though” – Kieran Devlin’s cautious response on Celtic transfer activity

This morning I wrote about how Celtic could be looking at bringing in a more defensive style midfielder with Pete O’Rourke telling us that the club could be open to or looking at bringing in another body in that area of the pitch.

It is a position that I feel needs strengthening, even if only to allow Callum McGregor to move higher up the pitch to offer a more attacking threat.

With Yosuke Ideguchi out injured again for another few weeks, we really only have James McCarthy as a backup option to McGregor and with the limited minutes he got last season, it does seem to me that Ange Postecoglou may not see him as the ideal player to fit into his hi tempo style.

But are Celtic really in the market to bring in another midfielder?

I would have thought so, but when asked that very question on his fan Q&A on The Athletic before the home win against Aberdeen yesterday afternoon, Kieran Devlin seemed to throw caution to the wind, “I think they potentially might, and of that defensively-minded profile you suggest.

“Wouldn’t want to say for certain though as it depends on the options left on the market having spent a lot of money already.”

I don’t think money will determine whether or not Ange brings in a player for that position.

The board have already proven that if the manager identifies a player, he will be backed to make sure he gets his man.

What will determine if a player comes in is whether the manager can find the right man to fill that position.

Postecoglou has spoken at length that it is not only ability that will earn you a move to Celtic Park.

He looks at the player as a person and if that player will fit the culture he is trying to build at the club no matter how good he is.

Maybe it’s just a simple case of the right person not coming along.

Yet.
