You have to hand it to the Clyde 1 Superscoreboard team. Scottish Cup weekend and Celtic had just beaten Falkirk and set up a massive Glasgow Derby fixture in the next round against Rangers at Ibrox.

All the talk on the programme was generally centred around the potential appointment of Eddie Howe as the next Celtic manager but strangely most of the chat amongst the pundits was whether or not Howe will get the sack if he’s not a success in his first season.

Hugh Keevins and Alex Rae where the main protagonists as the callers called to discuss the possible appointment of Howe but strangely, rather than be excited about such a high profile appointment being brought into the Scottish game, they both speculated on what would be sufficient grounds to sack a manager who has not even been hired yet.

Keevins kicked off proceedings by saying, “If Steven Gerrard and Neil Lennon had both lasted the full season and Rangers had lost and Celtic won 10 in a row, the chances are Gerrard would get the sack. When it gets to Eddie Howe against Steven Gerrard, one of them will get the sack”

Alex Rae, although not as scything as Keevins, gazed into his crystal ball and predicted Howe failing in his first season, “Now depending on how the season goes, if there’s really good signs that he’s taken the right direction, he’ll most certainly get the next season. However, if you buy and invest, and we should expect serious investment in the following summer. If it is not looking good at the end of that season, who knows if they will pull the trigger or not.”

It really is a strange way to look at an appointment that will shine the spotlight on our game and most likely encourage sponsors to invest in our league. But rather than focus on that, they would rather predict what would be probable cause for the yet to be hired manager to lose his job. Strange days indeed.
