You would think that after all the furore of Celtic’s trip to Dubai and the Bolingoli incident and the Aberdeen Eight, clubs would have learned that when players break the rules, they take their medicine and the clubs condemn their behaviour. It would seem that is the case, except when it comes to Rangers.

The team from Govan have bizarrely decided to appeal the ban the five partygoers received for breaching COVID rules, in fact, lets call it as it is, they broke the LAW, by attending a party during the latest lockdown and rightly, the club fined all players involved.

This week, the S.F.A. served all five players with a six game ban, four effective immediately with two suspended and Gerrard has astonishingly decided to appeal the bans for the five.

The pundits on PLZ – The Football Show were having none of Gerard’s excuses and Alan Rough was scathing in his criticism,  “It’s a piece of nonsense. It’s an absolute piece of nonsense.  I don’t know where they think they are coming from that they can dictate the rules different from everybody else.

“I find it really incredible that the club have already punished them for for whatever they did. I don’t think it makes any difference for one party or another party.

“They broke the rules and the police say they broke the rules, then you get punished. He’s (Patterson) only going to miss four games.

“It’s not the end of the world.  So unless they have something that we all don’t know of, then, it’s a piece of nonsense. To think of the arrogance to come up with something like that, like they’re different from anybody else.”

Fellow pundit, Allison McConnell, was just as damning and blasted Rangers “double standards”, “I don’t think you can have any double standards here at all I think game. The furore that met Celtic in the aftermath of going to Dubai, quite rightly, and the Bolingoli thing.

“All these incidents, no one had actually broken the law. These boys didn’t just break COVID regulations that were around football clubs, he actually broke the law that apply to citizens throughout the country.

“And I think in that respect it’s actually probably more severe than the restrictions and the legislation the football legislation that other players and other clubs were deemed to break, I just don’t think you can have a double standard”

This is really turning into an embarrassing episode for the Govan club and in many respects they have learned nothing from not only the first misdemeanours by Jordan Jones and George Edmundson, but they are also out of touch with the public’s feelings around COVID as Celtic found to their cost in January after the Dubai debacle.
